UCC Mardyke Gardens
The proposed facility for the Department of Social Studies UCC is being developed in conjunction with Cork City Councils Banks of the Lee Project which provides for a new bridge and walkways along the river.

The building is contained within the natural boundaries of the triangular site. The solid functional element is located at the western side of the site with a narrow profile to the Mardyke, and screened by trees from the neighbouring Cricket Ground. The central area of the building is set back as far as possible to the northern boundary of the triangle, to allow a substantial landscaped space between it and the Mardyke, and at the same time to relate to the open space between it and the river to the north. The extent of the central area to the east is curtailed, to allow maximum exposure to the walkway and the bridge beyond.

The building in this setting is confined to two stories. This central area is fully glazed on the ground floor, allowing the parkland beyond to be read through the building, from the Mardyke. The pavilion concept is reinforced by the use of the ground floor as a café and exhibition area which allows the total space to be appreciated without the interruption of subdivisions, and maximises the potential for interaction between students.
